For Immediate Release:

July FINAL SLAM! & Open Mic

Thursday, July 29, 2010 -- 8:00 PM -- $5

Auburn Saloon, #163, 115-9th Ave SE

Hosts: Jen Kunlire & Sheri-D Wilson

(Calgary, AB) July 12, 2010 – The Calgary International Spoken Word Festival would like to

announce the upcoming Calgary SLAM! & Open Mic - The SLAM! that determines the Calgary

National Team!!!

Elana Krol came away the winner in the May SLAM! & Open Mic. Now this is it! This is your

last opportunity to land a spot on the Calgary SLAM! Team!

Two-time Calgary SLAM! Team veteran, Jen Kunlire will share the stage with the Mama of

Dada, Sheri-D Wilson as the hosts of the July FINAL SLAM! & Open Mic. Passion Pitch Poetry

organizer Kirk Ramdath will open as the fabulously crafted Sacrificial Poet. The night

will also feature special guest readings from SLAM! enthusiasts: ‘da lyrical pitbull’

Wakefield Brewster will be laying down his latest verses; and Hamlet The Clown himself,

Kirk Miles will be back in action.

The night will also include a Wild Card Round where 2 lucky winners will be entered into

the SLAM! Finals, facing off against the previous month’s winners. Please note: there will

be a limited amount of spots for the Wild Card Round, so come early!

For those who do not wish to SLAM!, there will also be an Open Mic BUT with limited spots.

So come down, come early, strut your stuff and showcase your work. All styles are welcome!

The SLAM! phenomenon has taken hold in Calgary and the audiences continue to grow

exponentially. Hundreds of emerging poets have taken an interest in this fabulous new

form. Ten poets storm the stage to share their words and beats to packed-out, cheering

crowds! Judges from the audience score their performances in three intense rounds of

poetic excellence, until a winner is crowned! With different local performers every time,

SLAM! nights are impossible to predict and not to be missed!

How do you compete?

* An entrance fee, which is $5 (unless otherwise indicated).
* Bring 3 poems, each of them no longer than 3 minutes. You may not get to perform

them all, but bring them just in case.
* Friends! Part of the score is based on audience reaction.

Writer's Block is a radio program about writers and writing, and airs every Tuesday evening

at 8 PM on CJSW 90.9 FM, Calgary's campus and community radio station. The program is

hosted by myself and Stephanie Weidmann.

We would like to extend an invitation to you all to share your interests and expertise with

our listeners. We'd appreciate suggestions on books to feature on the program (poetry,

fiction, non-fiction, ficto-criticism, memoirs, biography, etc), suggestions for guests to

feature on the program, and I'd also be happy to invite those of you who are interested to

appear on the program to participate in interviews and/or discussions about topics that

interest you.

Writer's Block has monthly themes that we use to select programming.

July (right now!) is devoted to travel writing: memoirs, criticism, blogs, websites,

guides, etc. I'm looking for some content for our July 27th program.

August's programs will be devoted to gender, sex and sexuality:

- On Aug 16 we will host a live panel discussion (we call these panels the monthly Skull

Session) about "Blood and Guts in High School: A Novel", by Kathy Acker, and have one or

two seats available at the table for interested parties.

- We are currently scheduling programming for the other four programs in August: the 3rd,

10th, 24th, and 31st. Please let me know if you have suggestions for content. Again, we are

looking for both topics and people!

I look forward to hearing from interested parties. Please save my email address and feel

free to contact me anytime about the program.

Cheers,
PK
